Your eye color and skin tone determine what color of mascara is best for you! And guess what? Your eyebrow color too! If you want to bring out your eyes, then black mascara creates drama and adds glam to your eye make-up, otherwise brown mascara will work best while pulling off a natural look. Colored mascaras are gorgeous as well but are more bold and unconventional, however, a blue one for example can really bring out brown eyes.

Who doesn’t want their face to have that natural sun-kissed, glowy face without, well, getting in the sun at all? If you’re feeling too pale or tired, you can brighten and warm up your complexion with just a few, well-placed sweeps of bronzer.

Now, I wouldn’t be surprised if you’ve shied away from bronzer after having one too many bad experiences where you ended up looking too orange. But bronzer has come a long way from the chalky, orange-y, drugstore days of old. There are so many different types of bronzer, differentiating in formula, finish, and shade. And in order to look like your best glowy goddess, you need to know how to pick the one best suited for you – and of course how and where to apply it.

So, let’s start from the beginning, shall we?

How to apply bronzer

When it comes to perfectly applying bronzer, you have to start with knowing which shade to use. You should pick a bronzer that’s one or two shades darker than your skin.

Next, make sure you have a good brush. Choose a fluffy brush, with a rounded top. It can’t be too small or too dense and stiff as it might leave streaks. There are countless bronzer brushes and powder brushes you can get at makeup or drugstores. You should apply bronzer on the top of your forehead, under the cheekbones, and down under your jaw. You can also sweep it along the side of your nose.

Remember to always use a light touch, and start slow, building up as you see fit. It’s easier to add more product than remove it, right? Use light circular motions to blend it in.

One tip to remember is using the number three rule. So, start at the top of your forehead, just over your temple, bring the brush down and under your cheekbone, then back again and under the jawline, mimicking a number three.

Types of bronzer

Based on what type of skin you have, you can choose a bronzer formula that’s best suited to you.

Powder bronzer

Powder bronzer is the classic bronzer. It’s good for almost all skin types, but especially if your skin is more on the oily side. Apply it with a sparser brush and blend it well, building it up gradually. If you just load up your brush and apply it at once, it might end up looking harsh and unblended.

Cream bronzer

These will offer you a more subtle glow and are better suited for dry skin types. Just like with cream blushes, they can also be applied with your fingers (or with a brush, your choice) and tend to last longer.

Liquid bronzer

Liquid bronzers are pretty similar to cream bronzers, except they have a thinner consistency. The great thing about them is that they can blend seamlessly into your foundation – it just requires a bit more blending effort.

Bronzer finishes

Whether you want a more natural glow, or something a little more extra and shimmery, there are also different types of bronzer finishes.

Matte Bronzers

Matte bronzers are better at adding depth and definition to your face on top of warmth, and they work well with all types of skin. Matte bronzers are used for contouring – you would apply it on the sides of your face, under your cheekbones, under the jawline and the top of your forehead. Some people also use it to contour their nose.

Shimmer bronzers

You would typically use a shimmery bronzer on the cheekbones and up towards the temples, where the sun would normally hit your face. They are good for giving a more subtle, luminous, summer glow. You wouldn’t normally use one to contour.

However, if you have any blemishes or bumps on your skin, keep in mind that the shimmer in this bronzers works as a highlighter and will just bring more attention to them.

Sheer bronzer

This one packs less color then the previous two, but it’s perfect if you don’t really want any definition, just a natural glow that makes you look like you just got back from a vacation by the beach. Just like with shimmery bronzers, just apply it where the sun would naturally hit your face like the cheekbones and temples.

1. Apply your foundation before concealer

Hot tip: The easiest way to level up your makeup routine is to try applying your foundation before concealer. Think about it: Starting with a layer of foundation will help minimize any redness or discoloration—almost like you're creating a smooth base for the rest of your products. You can then go in with your concealer to spot treat any zits or remaining redness, and you'll end up using way less product in the process. Another plus? Foundation before concealer is a genius fix for preventing caking and creasing.

2. Maintain your eyebrows with a spoolie brush

On busy days when I don't have time to fill in my eyebrows, I like to do the next best thing: quickly comb up my arches with a spoolie brush (aka those little mascara wands). And even when I do have time for powders, gels, and pencils, I still like to prep my brows with my spoolie—it takes 10 seconds max, and it's an easy way to make sure each of my brow hairs are in the right spot before I go in with my products. Pro makeup tip: You can buy spoolie brushes in bulk for v cheap (I like the Cuttte Disposable Mascara Brushes) or go for something reusable (I'm a fan of Uoma Beauty's Brow-Fro Baby Hair, which also has a precision pencil on one end).

3. Exfoliate your lips before applying lipstick

Okay, you know when you apply lipstick and it doesn't go on smooth? Try prepping your lips with a gentle lip scrub (I like the or the KNC Beauty Lip Scrub) —the physical exfoliation will help buff away any dry skin sitting on top of your lips, leaving you with a smoother, softer canvas for your products. One thing to keep in mind: Lip scrubs should only be used once a week max—anything more and you'll risk irritation (aka the opposite vibe you're going for).

4. Don't sleep on blush

It might seem like an obvious step in your makeup routine, but IMO, blush is the most underrated product. A couple sweeps of cream or powder blush along the high points of your cheeks will give your entire look a brighter, warmer finish with pure ease. “I use blush on all my clients—it gives the skin that fresh and rejuvenated look and it adds the perfect amount of depth to the face," makeup artist Lakeisha Dale has told Cosmo. And, no, that doesn't mean you need to pick a bright-pink blush or anything like that—try going for something soft and glowy, like one of the picks below.

5. Melt your pencil liner to help it glide

Fact: Creamy makeup products blend better when they’re warmed up. So if your kohl eyeliner pencil skips or tugs on your eyelid or takes multiple coats for a decent color payoff, melt it down slightly before you start lining. To do so, hold the tip of your kohl liner under the flame of a lighter for a second or until it gets tacky, let it cool slightly (swatch it on your hand to make sure it’s not too hot or melted), then watch the consistency change right before your eyes.

6. Make your eyeshadow pop with white eyeliner

To make a sheer or less pigmented eyeshadow appear more vibrant on your eyelid, blend a white eyeliner pencil over your entire eyelid first. Then, put your eyeshadow right on top. The opaque coverage of the white liner will intensify any eyeshadow shade and make it pop.

1. For better grip, flip the bobby pin over so the wavy side is against your head.

If you have a hard time keeping your bobby pins in place, try flipping the pin over. The straight side is slicker and won't grip as well as the wavy, more textured side.

2. Insert bobby pins into your ponytail holder vertically to prop up your ponytail.

Once you've put your hair in a ponytail, insert two or three bobby pins halfway inside the elastic and facing downward toward the crown of your head. Then, fluff your ponytail and flip it over for a fuller look that won't sag or droop.

3. Texturize milkmaid braids with a teasing brush or toothbrush.

French maid braids look best when they're roughed up a little to achieve that lived-in look. To get that effect instantly, take a teasing brush or a toothbrush, and texturize the braids by brushing them against the way they've been braided.

4. Twist your hair, and slip your bobby pin underneath to discreetly pin back your strands.

If you're looking for a way to pull back the sides of your hair but don't want the pins to show, try this simple technique: Insert a bobby pin with the open end pointing toward your face and in the opposite direction of the section you're pinning back. If one bobby pin isn't strong enough, try using a larger one or reinforce it with a second pin right below.

5. Dust an eyeshadow (in the same color family as your hair) along your part to shade your scalp slightly, making your hair appear thicker.

Not only will this trick work IRL, but in pictures your hair will appear super-thick. You can also use this hack along your hairline if you wear it in a ponytail a lot or simply don't like to part your hair to get the same results.

6. Make your nail polish dry faster by soaking your nails in ice water after painting them.

Fill a bowl with ice and water, and soak your nails for a few minutes after painting them. The cold water will set the paint and help your nails dry faster.

7. The most flattering way to apply concealer is to draw a triangle with the base under your eye and the point toward your cheek. 

This shape not only conceals dark circles, but it also instantly creates the illusion that your face is lifted. Think of it as holding a flashlight against your cheek, shining the light right underneath your eye, and drawing the focus upward.

8. Use a concealer that's slightly lighter than your skin tone to line three tiny sections of your eyes: the inner "V," the middle section of your eyelid, and just below your brow bone.

Lightly blend for instantly well-rested eyes and a highlight that looks natural. Great for days when you didn't get enough sleep (or are just hungover).

9. Amp up your going-out makeup by contouring and highlighting your facial features with two concealers: one two shades darker than your skin tone and one two shades lighter. 

If you're using pencil concealers, you have more control of the placement, which makes contouring easy. Just draw the lighter shade of concealer on the areas that naturally catch light, and use a darker one to shade in the areas that are naturally shaded. Then, blend with a buffing brush like this one from Tarte Cosmetics.

10. Fix foundation stains with a little bit of shaving cream. 

If you take off your shirt and accidentally smudge your makeup on the collar, just wipe a dollop of shaving cream on the spot to pretreat it before tossing it in the wash.

Sweet like a candy, dangerous like a forbidden fruit… A bite and you’ve given up. This was the idea we had in mind while working on this super exciting new project with Viktor & Rolf for the launch of their iconic Bonbon perfume’s  beauty line. Needless to say that the whole entire collection is an absolute gem, it’s a whirl of sweet goodies to cover yourself up with and smell like the most delicious friandise in the world.

Since my childhood, my perfumes have always had a sweetness to them. Vanilla is probably one of my favorite scents in this world. If I could just drown in a cloud of vanilla, I would. As a kid, I would go into candy stores just to be able to get a sense of all the sweet flavors and fragrances. It would be my little guilty pleasure (and then I would leave with a stomach ache because of course I also had to try everything). Now candies are my little naughty sins. Just a few here and there. And the fact that it has become a special occasion makes it even more enjoyable. So instead now, I prefer to actually smell like a one.

If you have ever met me in person, then you must know that I actually do smell like a walking cotton candy. I do love however having a deeper, darker gourmand scent mixed up with the light and sweet notes, just to bring out the sensuality and make it more mature and sophisticated. So if you have ever tried Bonbon on your skin, you know exactly what I am talking about. It’s definitely a very elevatedBonbon we’re talking about here. Not just a candy… It’s sensual, sexy, mysterious and oh so tempting. I know for fact that every time I wear it, I always get asked what is it that I use?

Being able to work with Viktor & Rolf is also such an exciting endeavor. I’ve had the pleasure to attend their haute couture shows for two seasons now in Paris and am always just as impressed with their innovative, conceptual creativity. There’s so much artistry in their craft and I have so much respect for their vision. Having met them backstage during one of their venues, I could just tell that they have this “genius” aura floating around them. If you look at the bottle of the perfume itself, even though it’s pink and so to say “girly”, it’s still such a beautiful art piece, almost Jeff Koons inspired with it’s big puffy bow shaped silhouette. The bottle becomes a symbol of a delicious, feminine, playfulness.

Cibelle and I had such a great time shooting these images. I hope you guys will enjoy discovering them as much as we did creating them and make sure to head in stores to discover the whole Viktor & Rolf bath line and Bonbon perfume if you haven’t tried it already.
